The Second Mile and Beyond...

University of Colorado at Boulder—June 25-28, 2009

"...genuine second-milers...professed followers of Jesus who really live and love as he taught his disciples to live and love and serve."

You are warmly welcomed to the beautiful and progressive city of Boulder, a community which may well have the highest per-capita concentration of Urantia Book readers in the world. The picturesque university campus, nestled beneath the breathtaking Rockies, will provide an ideal setting for this conclave of friendly souls from far and wide.

Although the plan for this conference was sparked by a few younger-generation readers, there are readers of all ages contributing their time, talents, and experiential wisdom to the program and the planning. As it happens, this conference isn't officially sponsored by any organization, but it benefits from broad support and reflects the increasing spiritual unity in the readership.

People of all ages, walks of life, and familiarity with the book are encouraged to attend! If you are a new reader or have never been to a conference―please come―you will be glad you did! A new explorer of the truth in the Urantia Book will find the program very appealing and 'newcomer-friendly'. The rock-bottom early registration price of $280 covers room, board & program and is meant to be as affordable as possible in this first-class facility.

The spirit of The Second Mile and Beyond is the call to the challenge of truly living second-mile lives every single day―beyond what we ever have before...

"In winning souls for the Master, it is not the first mile of compulsion, duty, or convention that will transform man and his world, but rather the second mile of fee service and liberty-loving devotion that betokens the Jesusonian reaching forth to grasp his brother in love and sweep him on under spiritual guidance toward the higher and divine goal of mortal existence." ~The Uranta Book (195:10.5)

How do we take our own lives to the next level? In a world that is "quivering on the very brink" of "one of our most amazing and enthralling epochs", how can we truly go the second mile with this emergency revelation―both individually and as a community?

How can we increasingly infuse each and every moment in the daily grind of material facts with the spiritual energy of ideals―and truly achieve the rhythm and stride of striking step with God?

Don't miss this inspiring opportunity to share in the quest to transform our lives and grow in our ability to love with "a new and startling affection" and serve with "a new and amazing devotion"!

You have a warm welcome, a beautiful place, and good company waiting for you in Boulder! And, as icing on the cake, you might even find a life-changing and spiritually inspiring experience that hints at our life to come in the "many mansions of our Father's house..."

The Basic Details:
University of Colorado at Boulder―Thursday, June 25 to Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Registration starts at noon on Thursday, and dinner is at 5pm. Activities will wrap up Sunday afternoon.

Before the Conference:
You are welcome to come early to visit Boulder and you can arrange to stay in the university dorms one night before the conference. The Boulder area has several attractions, such as Rocky Mountain National Park, near the town of Estes Park, which is about 45 minutes by car.

After the Conference:
The conference program will end Sunday afternoon with a picnic and light hiking in Chautauqua Park, which is at the base of the Boulder Flatirons on the edge of Boulder and close to campus. You are welcome to stay an extra night in the dorms. After the conference, a group of readers will be doing a camping and outreach trip to the National Rainbow Gathering in the mountains of New Mexico (myspace.com/urantiacamp).

Travel Arrangements:
If you are flying into Denver International Airport (about 40 miles from Boulder), the “SkyRide” RTD bus Route AB runs direct from the airport to Boulder every hour and stops on Broadway at CU (16th/Euclid Stop) for $12 (rtd-denver.com). This is an express regional bus–very clean, safe, and comfortable. The Euclid stop is just a few feet from the University Memorial Center where most of the conference will take place, and a 5-minute walk to the dorms (Sewall Hall). There is also a door-to-door “SuperShuttle” van service for $31 ($10 each additional person) that can be pre-arranged (supershuttle.com). If you need additional help with travel arrangements, let us know.

Room Amenities and Roommates:
At CU Boulder, each room in the dorm holds two people unless you opt for a single. If you have a roommate preference, please write it on your application. Unmatched roommates will be put together by gender. For an additional cost, the limited number of single rooms will be assigned to earliest requests first.

Scholarships:
There will be a limited number of scholarships and discounted registrations available for first time conference attendees, students, youth, and children on an earliest-first basis. If you wish for a full or partial scholarship, please register early and contact Chris Wood (cwesquire@hotmail.com). Otherwise, please donate to the scholarship fund! Any help would be deeply appreciated. You can add a lot or a little to your registration or you can waive the early registration discounts to contribute to the fund.

Children:
There will be an all-age kid's program―inquire for details. Children under 12 who don't need their own bed (i.e. sleeping bags on the floor of their parents room) and who won't be eating at the conference are free.

Costs:
Registration (with room and board) is only 280$ if done before June – email me (mmacisaac@gmail.com) or the above email address (Chris) for a copy of the registration form and/or more info!

***Breaking News – Pato Banton and his band are going to play on the first night of the conference! If you have not seen him perform live yet you are really missing something! http://www.myspace.com/patobanton

Hey MIKE! Welcome to Truthbook brother! It's good to see your post here.

Thank You Mike.

For those here who weren't able to make it to IC08 I saw Mike make his presentation on the youth of Urantia. His room was packed with people sitting all around on the floor and where ever they could grab a seat on out the door into the hall. For a movement that has so many silver foxes it was wonderful to see the future of Urantia at Mike's workshop.

God Bless You Mike and all the work you do for the Love of God.

I know a lot of people want to go. I hope they are ALL able to arrange it in their schedules.

Tucker it's on! Get your time off work quick! Let's Go Dave. Bring April! :o

Thank you Mike for all your work and blessings you bring to your brothers and sisters even while in this Life.

Hi Susan,

Good idea -- right off the top of my head I can't think of anyone who posts here who was at the conference, but then, we might just be surprised. I didn't attend the conference except for the dinners and the special events. Friday evening was a party around the pool Mo Siegel's home. With perhaps 80 people in attendance at the conference and most of them attending in the party it was a lively affair. Saturday evening was a planetarium show put on by Chris Halvorson at the CU planetarium in which Chris explained some of the features of the observable sky and how they relate to The Urantia Book, and the challenges astronomers face trying to explain and reconcile what's observed by having physics only as a tool. A good proportion of the attendees were younger; everyone seemed to be enjoying the conference and the setting. I can attest to the food being excellent -- it's apparently catered by the university. For better insight we'll need to hear from someone who participated in the conference itself.

Larry

The following article appears in the latest Urantia Foundation Newsletter: http://urantia.org/Urantian/ufnews0909.pdf

The Second Mile In Retrospect: Thoughts On The Boulder Experiment
By Chris Wood, New York, USA

Editor’s Note: In the last issue of News Online, (Volume 3, Issue 2, June 2009) Chris Wood, a Urantia Book reader from upstate New York wrote an article entitled “The Second Mile as a Community Experience.” He organized a conference in Boulder, Colorado with long-time friends Shane C (Colorado, USA) and Michael MacIsaac (Nacka, Sweden).

Trustees Mo Siegel, Richard Keeler, and Marilynn Kulieke attended the conference.

The conference in Boulder was a community experiment. Could a guy from New York, a guy from Sweden, and a guy from Boulder get together and orchestrate a conference with little but gumption as a replacement for our lack of experience? We were steered by the credo of all well-meaning ignoramuses: If we could do it, then anyone could do it. We organizers had quite a list of expectations, the top of which was to foster an intangible, experiential atmosphere that would soak into, and linger in, the memories of the attendees for lifetimes to come. We were aiming for survival value. Our conference preparation was guided by three philosophies, the wisdom of which, in retrospect, warrants a brief evaluation for any “anyone can do it” out there.

First, there are many good reasons to host a conference. A conference can be used to launch an initiative, to attract the necessary players to a meeting, or even to help gel a local community which is otherwise scattered. Our membership organizations have conference schedules which provide regular opportunities for readers to get together. But our proposal was for a conference for its own sake. We were not an organization, we had no initiative, and we had no grand meeting; we just like conferences, and we wanted more of them.

Although there were a few skeptics who would squint their eyes and ask, “Who are you, and why are you really doing this?” by and large people were very supportive and turned out for the event. Of the 120 attendees, I estimate at least 60 of them would not have attended a conference this summer had Boulder not been offered. It was a mixture of the right location on the right weekend. The attendance lent support to the idea that during off years, when not playing host to an international conference, the North American Urantia Community will support multiple regional conferences.

Second, I cannot say if the audience noticed or not, but we decided that the Boulder Conference would be a place for experimentation with the standard conference structure. Some plenary speeches were 10 minutes, others 20, others 30. We planned a time slot for Sunday morning worship, but specifically did not fill that time until Saturday afternoon, after the conference was in full swing and a “conference identity” had been created. Our workshop list included nature walks, study groups, and a session on the final afternoon reserved for “repeated by popular demand” workshops. The stand-outs for many people were the small discussion groups on Friday afternoon, which made personal a program that too often can seem inaccessible. In general, a regional conference like Boulder was the perfect place for these variations. We had our fair share of successes and flops, a healthy mixture of unexpected joys and panics, but regional conferences are the very place for these experiments.

Third, you may never go broke underestimating people, but you will grow rich depending upon the Urantia Community. A year ago I helped out with the Kansas City Conference, and there we decided that we would prepare our own breakfasts and lunches. Our plan depended upon people showing up and helping out, and lo and behold, with very little prodding, people stepped up to wash fruit, cut vegetables, and serve eggs. In Boulder we catered the meals but kept the faith that Urantia Book readers would step up and make the conference better. When our music plan fell through, people brought out their banjos and guitars. When our Friday night social location proved difficult, a local couple volunteered their home. If given the opportunity to make a conference better, Urantia Book readers will step right in, and that hands-on involvement actually makes the conference experience better. If given the opportunity, 100 Urantia Book readers will make their own fun as long as you do not stand in their way.

The Boulder Conference began as a single idea, but with every idea comes responsibility. In a community of our size, good intentions get lost if not followed by good action. We had a good idea: We love conferences. We want more conferences. It had therefore to follow that we were charged, for one summer at least, with adding to the conference schedule. One thing about Jesus’ life is that even Jesus sometimes made mistakes, but he spiritualized all of his slip-ups. His entire life had survival value. Any honest evaluation of my average week would reveal so much that is wasted – perhaps not wasted in the material realm but wasted in the realm of the Supreme. But for a few days in the hills of Boulder, our experiences had a much greater universe value. So, I suppose, in that sense, it was a successful conference.
