A new Urantia Book reading group is forming. It will take place on the first Sunday of every month from 2:00 til 4:00, beginning May 3, 2009, at Gerdean and Angus Bowen's townhouse in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. We will first take some time to do an overview of the Parts of the Book, sample some "Topical Studies" and clarify what might be considered "Urantia Doctrine." This will serve to introduce us to the text and to each other before we begin a sequential reading. I have plenty of books on hand. No costs are involved. No commitment is required.

Refreshments will be provided. Call me if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you on the First Sunday in May, the 3rd at 2:00.

Thank you, Barry, Coop & Coop. (Sounds like the name of a law firm.) I am looking forward to it. For many years I have visited other people's UB study groups and/or hosted and/or participated in what one might call "home church," but I have not hosted a Urantia Book Study Group since 1993. The "home church" situation became more a social event than a spiritual event, which does not feed my soul. And I am not sure a "study group" will feed my soul either, since it is easy for UB groups to become so cerebral as to overlook the etheric aspects of the revelation and be come embroiled in intellectual one-up-man-ship which is, in fact, destructive of soul-growth. But I like the intellectual challenge of the Urantia Papers. My left brain misses the exercise. So I'm going to give it a good go.

I notified 14 people in this area and so far have received responses, to-wit: "I'm too busy"; "It's too far away"; "I will be out of town in May but will be there in June"; "I found my Urantia Book!"; "I will be there!" and "I'll be there if I don't have to work." Not everyone has responded, and I admit I am not good at counting noses. I tend to think in terms of "Live and Let Live" and if they want to come, fine; if they don't want to come, that's fine, too. The main thing is to get something fixed in time and space. For many years, many times I established a day and time for a meeting, only to sit and read by myself. But it was a wonderful discipline for me and I have no regrets ... about any of my avenues of spiritual advancement.

I'll share my experience, strength and hope as time goes by. First thing I intend to do is pick out some great excerpts from Part I, drag in my engineer's rendition of the Master Universe, and Chuck Montomery's artwork as study aids. I also have Clyde Bedell's Concordex, Harry McMullan's Index, and the Ruth Renn's Study Aids for Part IV. Between our seven adjutant mind spirits, the spirit of truth, and the Thought Adjuster collective, we have more than enough to get started. Thanks for your well-wishes.

It ended up that of the approximately 20 people invited, there were three in attendance on Sunday, which was enough to constitute a "group." We had a marvelous study. The nearly two hours was spent discussing highlights of the Contents (notably the authors), the Foreword (Urantia's location and the Acknowledgement in particular) and Part One in general, (highlighting the Nature of God and sundry other points of interest), as well as some in-depth discussion about how the UB doctrine compares to Catholic doctrine (specifically as to the afterlife). Everyone professed to have enjoyed the session ... and the apple pie we had with ice cream.

At next month's First Sunday gathering we hope to inculcate two people who were away on vacation this month. If it goes well, I am determined to place an ad in our local paper to see if we can elicit more interest and if so, I will find a public location where we can meet.

So we're off and running. "Let the FERRRR Fly!"

Reading about Seattle and Fall City groups forming and re-forming ran me right into the proverbial dark hole. The group I thought I was starting earlier this year fizzled out before it really got started. And it would not be so bad except this is a repeat of what happened thirty years ago, and 20 years ago, and 10 years ago. It is like pulling teeth to get these desert rats into the same hole, all at once. Fiercely independent, I guess. I guess I ought not complain. My old friend, the one I gave a Book to back in the mid-80's, HAS taken an interest in it .... two old friends, in fact, but again, there is that fierce independence that disallows any group forming. Rio Rancho Roadrunners, indeed. Beep beep! Maybe with fall coming on, folks will be more inclined toward cerebral and sociable activities. Meanwhile a small (18 people) ALL-sponsored UB conference has formed at the San Geronimo Lodge in Taos, NM, next weekend, to which I am looking forward with great anticipation.
