What is The Urantia Book? How would you classify it? Is it a bible or sacred text? What should I tell people who ask this question?

I myself have always considered it to be a kind of bible, mainly because I was a bible-believing Christian before adopting The Urantia Book as the principal source of inspiration in my spiritual life, but The Urantia Book defies my attempts to pigeonhole it. It seems to be in a category of its own because there is simply no other book like it in all the world.

So, then, how should I approach it? How should I introduce it to people, especially Christians, who notice me reading it at Starbucks and want to know what it is? :?:

Hi urantiangirl...

I wish I could relate some tried-and-true methods of introducing The Urantia Book that have worked for me. Unfortunately, I don't have such success stories...but I keep trying when I have the chance!

I am offering this short (5 minute)video to you to consider as a way of simplifying such a big question into a smaller bite - by focusing on the word "Urantia," and some of the book's teachings, rather than the whole book. The video is from Alice Wood, who is a long-time reader with a YouTube channel called Urantia Life Lessons.

Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj-DH9AyAcs

There's also a link in the video desciption that I think might be useful for you.

It's just a suggestion. I am sure others here might have some advice for you, too.

Good luck!

MaryJo

Description of the UB at Amazon:

"You have just discovered the literary masterpiece that answers your questions about God, life in the inhabited universe, the history and future of this world, and the life of Jesus. The Urantia Book harmonizes history, science, and religion into a philosophy of living that brings new meaning and hope into your life. If you are searching for answers, read The Urantia Book!

The world needs new spiritual truth that provides modern men and women with an intellectual pathway into a personal relationship with God. Building on the world's religious heritage, The Urantia Book describes an endless destiny for humankind, teaching that living faith is the key to personal spiritual progress and eternal survival. These teachings provide new truths powerful enough to uplift and advance human thinking and believing for the next 1000 years.

A third of The Urantia Book is the inspiring story of Jesus' entire life and a revelation of his original teachings. This panoramic narrative includes his birth, childhood, teenage years, adult travels and adventures, public ministry, crucifixion, and 19 resurrection appearances. This inspiring story recasts Jesus from the leading figure of Christianity into the guide for seekers of all faiths and all walks of life."

From Urantia Association International:

"The Urantia Book describes the origin, history, and destiny of mankind and our relationship with God. It opens new vistas of time and eternity, and reveals new concepts of our ever-ascending adventure of finding the Universal Father in his friendly and carefully administered universe, and presents a clear and concise integration of science, philosophy, and religion. It presents a unique and compelling portrayal of the life and teachings of Jesus.

The book provides intensely moving insights that could transform human life and inspire all men and women on our planet, Urantia. The central message is that all human beings are one family, the sons and daughters of one God, the Universal Father.

The authors instruct us on the origin, history, and destiny of mankind and on our relationship with God. They also present a unique and compelling portrayal of the life and teachings of Jesus, open new vistas of time and eternity, and reveal new concepts of Man’s ever-ascending adventure of finding the Universal Father in our friendly and carefully administered universe. The views of science, philosophy, and religion presented in The Urantia Book are perhaps the clearest and most concise integration of these subjects available to contemporary man.

Among the many thousands of people who have purchased, read, and studied The Urantia Book, there is no question that it can make a significant contribution to the religious and philosophic thinking of all peoples. It truly has the potential to reshape world destiny. Over and over, people from around the world have discovered that the truths of The Urantia Book have profoundly impressed them and changed their lives—inspiring them and stimulating them to new levels of spiritual growth and enlightened living.

The authors of The Urantia Book do not describe or advocate a new organized religion. They build on the religious heritage of the past and present, encouraging a personal, living religion based on faith and on service to one’s fellows. This spiritual awakening would launch a new and improved era of human relationships, so that we can realize social brotherhood on our planet and achieve lasting peace and good will through the spiritual transformation of each individual and all mankind."

From the Urantia Foundation:

"The Urantia Book is a revelation of truth for our world from higher beings in the universe. Its teachings blend science, philosophy, history, cosmology and religion seamlessly into a big picture revealing our origin, our purpose, and our divine and eternal destiny, “the agelong process from animal to angel, from angel to spirit, from spirit to God.” The Urantia Book, (558.2) 48:8.4

The teachings include information on the composition, organization, administration, and personalities of the cosmos; the history of our planet; our continuing spiritual evolution; a new view of reality by clarifying the concepts of personality, mind, and soul; the evolutionary experience of our progression towards God in partnership with God’s spirit in our minds; and lastly, an enlarged account of the life and teachings of Jesus."

From TruthBook:

"Have you ever asked yourself, “What is the meaning of life?” When crisis hits do you wonder, “Is there a purpose for my suffering?” Or do you feel confused when religious ideas directly conflict with scientific facts?

There is a book that offers a fresh perspective on these age-old questions. It also provides reassurance about the future and a path to personal peace of mind. It's called The Urantia Book, and it is a treasury of spiritual truth and intellectual insights. Within its pages you'll discover an integrated picture of life unified by science, religion, and philosophy. Rooted in history, clarified by facts, and illuminated by spiritual wisdom, its teachings will impart a new sense of purpose in your life's journey.

The Urantia Book offers useful answers to life's most perplexing questions:

Why do evil and suffering exist? How can we achieve lasting world peace? Is there intelligent life on other planets? What is God's purpose for my life? How can I become a happier and more fulfilled person?Who is Jesus? What did he teach?Where is he now? Will he come again? Is there life after death? What is heaven like?

“There is in the mind of God a plan which embraces every creature of all his vast domains, and this plan is an eternal purpose of boundless opportunity, unlimited progress, and endless life....The goal of eternity is ahead! ... Certain victory will crown the efforts of every human being who will run the race of faith and trust.” 32:5.7-8

Great video Maryjo!! Thanks.

So... our descriptions of the UB can be gentle and inclusive and inviting. Or they can be shocking and irrational and repulsive. That probably depends on the person we are describing to as well as the description itself. Is there a single best description for all people?

The UB appeals to so many different people in so many different ways. Is the inquiry merely conversational or polite? Is the person a truth seeker? Or are they confident in their faith? Are they open minded or firmly entrenched?

How do we discern these factors?

Is the UB an "interesting book about..." or is it "a Divine Epochal Revelation"? Which might gain interest and create conversations?

Personally I have often told others it's about God and our connections to God and one another. And it's about our origins and destiny as the children of God. I will also tell those who inquire that it's about THE ONE TRUE RELIGION. And then tell them THAT is the RELIGION we each live individually by our own unique and personal experience connected to God and in the family of God. And the UB is about our expressions of sharing that inner light and life with others.

For to me that's what the book is all about. Indeed, it's message is one of revealed knowledge and truth that includes the fact and truth that beliefs and knowledge are secondary to hope and faith and trust in God. Is it then helpful or even relevant to first proclaim the knowledge revealed in the UB or is it better to proclaim the truth of the Gospel of Light and Good News that we are God's beloved children and we are all family who share origin and destiny?

The Master taught by asking honest and sincere questions to discover shared and common interests and meanings and values. He then built bridges of conversation connecting those commonalities between himself and others so they felt heard and understood and validated and motivated and inspired. Do we inspire and encourage others by our descriptions of the UB I wonder? Isn't the UB about them and their highest hopes and ideals and happiness? Yes of course it is!
