I've been thinking a great deal about the following quote
Quote:
91.5.2 But prayer need not always be individual. Group or congregational praying is very effective in that it is highly socializing in its repercussions. When a group engages in community prayer for moral enhancement and spiritual uplift, such devotions are reactive upon the individuals composing the group; they are all made better because of participation. Even a whole city or an entire nation can be helped by such prayer devotions. Confession, repentance, and prayer have led individuals, cities, nations, and whole races to mighty efforts of reform and courageous deeds of valorous achievement.

When I struggle and folks tell me they are praying for me...seems to help greatly. Latley I've experienced group prayer and its effects....feels very powerful in that connecting and uplifting way. I wonder if we all did more praying together we could get to that place where entire nations are helped by our devotions.

Hi fishinmom,

Thanks for your post about group prayer. I agree that prayer of this kind can be very powerful. If only enough of us would agree to join our voices and our petitions, I think we could change things greatly in this world.

When I was a kid in Catholic schools, I knew about orders of nuns that did nothing but pray all day long. We used to be taught that no one would ever realize all the goodness that had come to pass because of their ceaseless prayers. It was an idea that impressed me, and even though I ended up divorcing myself from the church, I still imagine this power of group prayer...

thanks...

FLIP-SIDE

Mom, I, too, have been thinking much about prayer...and its' power.

Should we start with the premise that everything we do, think or say is a FORM of prayer (which I believe), doesn't it make sense to step back from the panaroma just far enough to appreciate what is NOT being prayed for? There is a progression, a naturally evolving sequence of considerations. The young and the old, the experienced and the novice each experiencing prayer as a normal consequence of moral capacity...oftentimes unaware.

Perhaps if we consider what we no longer pray for we will generate a 'Thanksgiving' list. I know that the Spirit of Thanksgiving can lead to increased sincerity and worship as well as more effectual prayers.

Group prayer is another matter. If we assume group prayer is a real power, do we not allow that group prayer is an actual reality...even before we think so? Even now, I am concerned with what we, as a species, pray for. What are we saying to the universe? today?

As a species, we pray for war. Not because we cherish warfare but because we lack a paradigm where war is unfavorable. We expect conflict and embrace victory, defeat or compromise as inevitable. And so it is for now on Urantia. We tolerate our times.

I was speaking with my son, Michael, earlier today on the same subject. He suggested I familiarize myself with Sri Baba and Dr. Albert Hofmann author of "Insight Outlook". So, I'm off to the library to PREY upon their knowledge...as is our human nature.

IMHO, there is much about prayer that the Bible has to teach any who will seek. The UB casts new light in which to consider payer both personally and collectively...not as a species but as a group. HOW Jesus prayed, per UB, is the highest example we have. THAT Jesus prayed "unceasingly" is our key. It's a matter of perspective and responsibility, self-mastery and sublime humility, habitual sweet submission to divine will.

The power of prayer works first in spirit. I perceive the MIND of Urantia today as the mind of a human male about 13 years old.(Please don't ask). When I PRAY for Urantia, I find a MIND not my own that becomes aware, absolutely aware, of ME, all of me...all that will survive and all that will not. This MIND is neither judge nor jury. This MIND is divine and evolving with every experience...like an average 13 year old mind. This MIND transcends moral capacity and reflects what I have come to know as "spirit desire"...a vanguard unction.
That's when I know how to pray. The whole concept of "power" is...unwarranted.

Thanks for reading. Hope to see Mom in Boulder...U2, maryjo.

Bill

Aloha...the only problem I have with group or individual prayer is the prayer for a specific outcome...whether it be with illness, money, relationships, etc...rather than prayers for strength, wisdom, peace, guidance...and thy will be done. when you don't get your way one can become angry or confused about God and start blaming God for the outcome. then God is not about love but a judgmental God...which we know is not true. Then comes the manipulation and rituals to get our way...and all the woobie-woobie stuff that goes along with it...to gain God's "favor"

I have experienced Love in gatherings and it is food for the soul...

Hi tootsie...hope ya havin a wonderful day with lots of pretty sites. It is actually hot here today...not even raining LOL. Had to turn on the AC and it somehow made me think of you and warm weather beauty. Gotta come see you sometime :-) I am glad you brought up intentions and expectations. That is such an important component in prayer. For me, when in an active form of worship, I pray in a very simple way with the intent of opening myself up to the Father and giving him the opportunity in my life to do whatever is His will. I am giving myself over to a wonderful experience of feeling so grateful, connected, and participating in a very simple form of loving. Our study group spends time at the end in silent worship and prayer....each doing their own thing with the Father...and yet we are together in that experience...feels awesome and seems to have many benefits in my life. I love your woobie-woobie...gonna say that for days..LOL super funny and good way to remind us all not to get into silly stuff...reminds me to be sure I am sincere in my worship. Love that  O:)

He Uncle Bill :-) hope to see ya at the conference too O:) You make me feel good about my hanging out with the Father all the time...talkin and walkin and singing with Him. I do feel this sense of constant communion coming over my life...growing into that experience daily :-)

Would love to hear how folks have experienced benefits from praying more...and the experience of praying together. I have also found it very important to go off and silently meditate with the Father by myself...I come away from that experience feeling so loved and an energy that I cannot describe...a peaceful horizon....lighted and warmed.

Thanks, Mom. I love you.

tootsie, I love you, too. Sweet souls.

The issues tootsie mentioned would arise if we were to develop a religion around. say...sunflowers. Traditions would form based on what those in power deemed successful. "If it worked once it'll work again" kinda thinking. Superstition, or superstitious thinking, is also a devious and deep-hidden ill-root. It's not as easy to identify and resolve as is some outward pracitce. Cleaning up our own thinking and the difficulties we personally face in the effort, are likely to afford us some patience when dealing with others. Also, a higher perspective evolves which tends to re-value our system of objections and observations. Bottomline is...it's absolutely personal.

Something to ponder,
Bill
