The ego has many tricks to lead you off the path to God. The wish for “powers” is one. Wish, instead, for a relationship with him; he will use you to the best of your abilities.
Can you increase your abilities? Absolutely! Meditation, self-observation, yoga, prayer, sacred dance..., these are technologies for personal growth and not a means for ego enhancement if the goal is God.
Rumi is supposed to have said: “new organs of perception come into being when there is a need for them. Therefore, in order to increase your perception, increase your necessity.”
