Someone dear to me lost her dad unexpectedly. She was sitting in her home when a police car pulled up. Two people got out and walked to her door. One was in uniform, the other wasn't. She answered and was told her father had died. After she was given more information she asked who the plain-clothed person was. It was a counselor. She wondered why a pastor or clergy wasn't there and was told that such a presence was too controversial. And so it begins...

sorry to hear about your friends loss. "such a life on such a world". My personal preference would be to have a counselor rather than a pastor because unfortunately I have begun to associate many of the figures of the establishment religions with members of a certain political party.
As long as the representative give compassion and understanding, it is probably pretty much of a push. At least that is how I feel about it.
Have a wonderful day sir.
Al

Hello Tramp, I too am saddened to hear of your friend's temporary loss and I see your feelings on the public situation. I will agree with Al regarding the accompanying of a Counselor on such visits. It does seem that we need to continue to roll with the separations of church and state and it would be swimming down the slippery slope to have religious professionals ride along with the po po. From which religion or domination should/would they be drawn? Picking any one would possibly anger everyone else not to mention our atheist and agnostic brothers and sisters be made uncomfortable by likely unwanted and not-asked-for communications. Keep secular things secular seems the best course. Be well my old friend!

Thanks for your thoughts, al, and angels. I don't consider myself a Christian because my beliefs don't fit their requirements for membership. I try to be a Jesusonian. When partisans of any side add their politics for Christian membership my reply is to quote Gandhi and attribute him, "If not for Christians, I'd be one."

I fully support separation between church and state but my disappointment was in the "because it's too controversial" justification. When I was in the army, we had Chaplains who were non-theological when personal prayer or spiritual comfort was sought, and that at least used to be the case with police and fire departments.

Separation of church and state shouldn't be a hand to the face of someone seeking spiritual comfort and that was my friend's perception. I don't think she is a Christian, either.
