On dictionary.com it states "preferred" as a synonym... I think that sums it up. It's the ambiguity between "select" as in choosing and "select" as in valuable.

I think it's also suggestive of location... namely the continental shelves, basins, and inland seas. I don't think life is usually started or fostered in the deep oceans excluded from sunlight. The shallow waters are more nursery-like.

The consituents that are "extinguished" I think are mind, personality, and associated identity. The mind is simply taken away it being just a mechanism to think. Identity will go back to the "cosmic potentials" and personality will be absorbed into the "oversoul of creation....
